A number of memorials located in cemeteries and private courtyards on the island of Kefalonia commemorate events of the Greek Civil War and honor those who participated in it. Drawing on oral testimonies from family members who erected these memorials, this study explores the motivations behind their construction, the political and historical circumstances that enabled their creation, and their reception within local communities. It also examines the influence of memory on familial political identities, the messages these families seek to convey, the relationship between family and collective memory, and the degree of certainty with which families assess the moral significance of their relatives’ participation in EAM organizations or in the Civil War itself.

The history of the religious press in Greece remains largely unexplored, despite the exceptionally high volume of domestic religious publications relative to the country’s population size and social stratification. Over a period of 140 years (1826–1966), approximately 550 ecclesiastical, theological, religious, and moralizing publications appear to have circulated across the Greek territory in different historical periods and regions—an average of four new publications per year. Given these figures, it is worth questioning the impact of religious print culture on Greek society. Did it remain confined to the “periphery” of the public sphere, or did it play a central role in shaping social representations? More specifically, can religious publishing be understood as contributing to the formation of a distinct popular culture? To address these questions, this study focuses on a period marked by a dramatic expansion in print production and the dynamic emergence of religious discourse within the public sphere. In particular, it examines the function of pietistic religious publications from the interwar years to the 1967 coup d’état, focusing on the activities of the influential religious brotherhood “Zoe.” The article sheds light on the production and dissemination of religious publications, the objectives they were intended to serve, and the legacies these practices left in the post-dictatorship (Metapolitefsi) era.
